Bryce and Claudia Saunders share their story of how their marriage has gone from on the rocks to built on the firm foundation of God, restoring and strengthening their family.
Bryce: My childhood shaped my view of marriage. I have an amazing mom and dad, but with my parents divorcing early on in my childhood I never really had a guide on what it was like to be a good husband. Claudia and I met when we were young. We bought a house and like many people, we tried to impress them with “things.” That lifestyle was so hard to maintain and after a while it put a strain on our marriage. We started fighting so much.
Claudia: Trusting men was hard for me. I was married before Bryce and was left to raise two young girls alone. I had to figure things out and when things started to get difficult with Bryce, I did what I did before: I tried to figure things out… alone.
We decided the best thing was for us to separate; we sold the house and went our separate ways.
A Life-Altering Invitation
Claudia: After some time apart, we tried to give our marriage another shot, but we knew something had to change. A friend of ours who knew what we were going through invited us to City Church and we went to a service.
It wasn’t like everything changed that Sunday, but I felt something I had never felt before. It was as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
Maybe this was what we were missing. So, we kept coming each week.
Bryce: Eventually, we signed up for a baseball Connect Group. That’s when I started seeing God move in my life and in our family. Just being able to hang out with people that are going through the same things we were but dealing with them in a better way was life-changing.
We were running from God and His plan for our marriage and family, but now He’d found us! We were baptized at City Church and haven’t looked back since.
Living Fully Alive
Bryce: I am not the same man I was 7 years ago. I’m so thankful that I’m able to be the husband and father God designed me to be. I realize that there’s so much more to life than working and buying “things” for the sake of impressing; it’s about connecting to God and others, making a real difference in this world, and being present for my wife and kids.
I’ve always had a passion for creativity and now I serve in the stage and lighting creative team. To be able to do something with my hands that goes beyond what I do during the week is so life giving and fulfilling.
Claudia: 7 years after I gave my life to God, our family is together the way God intended it to be, our children are pretty amazing kids, we were finally able to buy a home. GOD has been molding me like Him throughout the years and, although I fail at times, He reminds me of His love and grace to pick myself up and keep moving forward.
Going through all this has also helped me discover purpose – there are women like me, families like mine that need to hear our story. If you are reading this, just know… you are not alone in this!
God has a plan for you and your family to live a life fully alive.
